Writing a blog? It’s like packing a suitcase.

“Each word that goes onto the brightly lit page is an item folded and placed neatly into the bag”
For me, writing content on behalf of a client is like the act of packing a suitcase for a holiday. I place my laptop on the table, open a new document and let my fingers find their way to the keys, just as if I am unzipping the luggage, flipping the cover open and preparing in my mind how I will fill it. A fresh start sits before me, an adventure waiting to be embarked on. Each word that goes onto the brightly lit page is an item folded and placed neatly into the bag, each sentence a coordinated outfit of verbs, adjectives and nouns. I think about the itinerary, the attractions we will visit and the overall purpose for the trip. I imagine the personality of the client and how they want to be shown- what fun hats or bold accessories they would pack.
As words begin to dance across the screen I become more excited about the future journey, who I will meet along the way and the memories which I will look fondly back on. Each assignment is different and portrays the voice of the client in a unique way. Helping to put their voice into writing brings me closer to their personality, passions, interests and goals.
“I make the final decision that the glittery handbag that doesn't match with anything- although it sure does sparkle- will not be included on this trip”
The bag is almost full but before I zip it closed I check the weather predictions for the upcoming week and see that I've over packed with unnecessary items. And now, the editing begins. The cursor highlights and deletes run on sentences, the backspace key erases weak phrases and more vibrant words are sprinkled throughout, just as I would remove the heels that aren’t needed on the camping trip, reconsider the multiple of pants I packed for a one week summer getaway with something more practical and make the final decision that the glittery handbag that doesn't match with anything- although it sure does sparkle- will not be included on this trip.
“It is a process of understanding where you are going, what experiences I want to have when I arrive”
Before I travel I always pack, repack and then pack again. It is a process of understanding where you are going, what experiences I want to have when I arrive and how to prepare myself to make it the best holiday it can be. The act of writing is the same, whether for myself or for another. When writing for a client I see it as an adventure that begins with a journey of getting to know how to support each other on the road to success. With that being said, let’s travel!
